London Greens support striking care workers

London Green Party showed its support for striking care, maintenance and cleaning staff at Sage Nursing Home in North London as they begin their fourth consecutive day of strike action.

The workers, organising with United Voices of the World (UVW), are demanding a wage of £12 per hour, parity with NHS sick pay and annual leave, and other improvements to their working conditions.

The workers currently earn between £8.72 and £9.60 per hour, and until December relied entirely on Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) in case of illness. The workers have also complained of mistreatment at the hands of the home’s management.

Greater London Assembly candidate Zack Polanski described the workers as “incredible”, saying: “They’ve been working every single day during the pandemic. All they’re asking for is a fair living wage, and parity with the NHS with full sick pay. We’ll be with them until they win.”

The Sage nursing home trustees met with Sage workers and union representatives on Friday, but have so far refused to meet their demands.
