GPTU May newsletter

Dear GPTU member,

Welcome to GPTU’s FIRST ever email update! It’s taken us a while to get this set up – but now it’s here, we’ll be sending these updates periodically (normally once a month). Eventually, we hope that these will be specialised for members of each particular union.

We’ve got a busy couple of months coming up – have a look below!

GPTU members – please take our 2-minute survey!

GPTU’s got hundreds of members across the Green Party so we really need to get to know you a bit better.

So we can work out where we should be campaigning and what we should be working on, we just need to know what part of the country you’re in and what union(s) you’re active in. Please take our 2-minute survey and let us know.

Support the UCU universities strike – THIS WEEK, 25th-26th May

SMG - 25-26 May UCU fbThe Green Party Trade Union Group is calling on Greens to support the strike called by the UCU union in universities and Higher Education, 25th-26th May.

University and HE staff will be on strike for two days not only against pay which has fallen by over 14% in real terms since 2009, but also against a huge 12.6% gender pay gap in Higher Education, and against increasing insecurity and casualisation of employment contracts for HE staff.

Please get in touch with your local Green Parties, Green students’ groups and UCU branches in your area to support the picket lines if you can! You can also share GPTU’s posts on Facebook and Twitter to get the word out to fellow Greens.

GREEN_LOGO_CIRCLE_300dpiNext week, the Green Party’s Greens for a Better Europe campaign (#GreenerIN) will be focusing on how EU membership benefits workers and their rights at work.

GPTU will be working on a social media campaign to support this, and we’ll be asking GPTU members to participate. Please watch out for announcements next week. Like us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter for updates!

JULY: Durham Miners’ Gala and Tolpuddle Festival

Coming up in July we have the Durham Miners’ Gala (Saturday 9th July) and the Tolpuddle Martyrs’ Festival (15th-17th July) – major events in the Trade Union calendar. We’re pleased to say that the GPTU banner will be proudly marching at both events! At Tolpuddle we will also have a GPTU stall.

Please let us know if you’re coming to either event, and if you’d like to march with our banner or help with the stall.
